Courtesy Chevrolet is proud to announce that as of the end of last year, Chevrolet set a global sales record, increased sales in 15 of their global markets, and helped parent company, GM, become the world's top auto seller. That's right, GM sold more than 9 million vehicles in 2011, and 4.76 million of those units were new Chevrolet models.
In fact, Chevrolet broke their own sales records this year, starting with a 13-percent increase in the United States, for a total of 1,775,812 units in 2011. Breaking the nearly 5-million vehicles down a bit, major markets for Chevrolet last year included Russia and South Africa, both with a sales increase of 50 percent. Brazil sold a record total of 632,201 vehicles, and China followed close behind, selling 595,068 cars last year.
How did Chevrolet do it? Sales numbers can be largely attributed to best-selling models like the new 2012 Chevrolet Cruze and 2012 Chevrolet Sonic. Last year, the award-winning Cruze led the company's global sales, becoming the best-selling Chevy with a total of 1.13 million units sold since it first launched in 2009. Last year alone, car dealers sold 670,000 Cruze models around the world.
According to GM Chairmen and CEO, Dan Akerson, "Chevrolet's impressive growth in both established and developing markets is the result of a strong new product lineup that meets the diverse needs of consumers around the world. In addition to Chevrolet's record-setting sales, the entire lineup...is meeting customer needs for fuel-efficient cars and work vehicles."1 Drivers around the world are finding that the trucks and gas-sipping vehicles from Chevy offer unmatched performance, style, and versatility.
Chevrolet has no plans of slowing down, either. With over 60-percent of their sales taking place outside of the United States, they've already started working towards expanded sales globally this year. According to Tim Lee, President of GM International Operations, "In 2012, we will continue to expand our range with even more great vehicles as we pursue further growth in our key markets."2
